August FUNdraiser | Honor Flight

What is Honor Flight?

Conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and retired Air Force Captain, the inaugural Honor
Flight® took place in May 2005. Six small planes left Springfield, Ohio with only 12 World War II
veterans on a visit to Washington D.C. to see their memorial. After word got out, the list of veterans
grew and Honor Flight® transitioned from a few small planes to commercial airlines.
Since then, Honor Flight® has flown over 250,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. from all over the
country. Today, Honor Flight® is a national network of non-profit organizations (hubs) like Honor
Flight South Florida, whose sole mission is to honor America’s Veterans for all the sacrifices they’ve
made on behalf of our country.

Honor Flight South Florida is an all-volunteer organization, dedicated solely to honoring veterans in
Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties. In the final chapter of their lives, it’s sometimes a race
against time to fly these veterans to Washington to visit and reflect at the memorials built in their
honor. Top priority is given to the members of our Greatest Generation, those who served during
World War II. Priority is also given to terminally ill veterans of any service period. Every one of these
veterans takes this trip at no cost to them.

For those who served between 1941-1975, the veteran’s one-day mission includes round-trip airfare,
deluxe bus transportation, meals, commemorative t-shirt and hat, and other amenities in order to
travel comfortably. HFSF provides complimentary wheelchairs, and medical personnel to assist
where needed.

Every trip includes a team of well-trained volunteers and guardians, who personally accompany this
elite group throughout the entire day. Guardians pay their own way, and 100% of all donations
received go toward honoring and flying veterans. Throughout the trip, the veterans are recognized
and thanked for their service to America. They come home feeling renewed after being reminded
how much their county loves and respects them. Our American veterans deserve nothing less.
